In this article, you’ll learn how to use some of the more advanced Thrive Quiz Builder features: showing different content on your results page depending on how someone scored, troubleshooting the display and functionality issues that come up most often, connecting quizzes to Thrive Automator, Thrive Leads, and your email service, and keeping your quizzes running smoothly.
How to Show Dynamic Content on Your Quiz Results Page
Thrive Quiz Builder gives you two tools for showing content that depends on the quiz outcome. They’re meant to be used together: the Quiz Result shortcode displays a value, and the Dynamic Content element swaps in entire content blocks.
The Quiz Result Shortcode
The [tqb_quiz_result] shortcode displays the visitor’s result inline, wherever you place it in a Text element. You can type it yourself, or insert it from the editor by choosing Quiz Result from the quiz shortcodes in the text toolbar.
Without any extra settings, the shortcode shows:
- Number quizzes – the points scored
- Percentage quizzes – the percentage scored (you can choose to round it to a whole number, 1 decimal point, or 2 decimal points)
- Right/Wrong quizzes – correct answers out of the total, for example 3/5
- Category quizzes – the name of the winning category
Showing Category Data
For Category quizzes, the shortcode can also show the result for one specific category or a breakdown of every category. In the editor’s Quiz Result window, switch from Winner to Category Data, then choose Single Category or All Categories. You can also set these options directly in the shortcode:
category– show the result for one category, using its name (for examplecategory="Empathy").show_all_categories="true"– show every category’s result at once, one per line.sort_by– when showing all categories, list them fromhighest(the default) orlowest.include_zero="true"– when showing all categories, include categories the visitor scored zero points in. In the editor, this is controlled by the Exclude Empty Categories option.result_type– how the value is shown:points(raw points),share(percentage of the visitor’s total points), orpercent(percentage of the maximum possible points for that category). In the editor, this is the Value Format option.
The Dynamic Content Element
The Dynamic Content element lets you build different content blocks for a page and have Thrive Quiz Builder automatically show the right one based on the quiz outcome – for example, “if someone scores in the top range, show this block; if they score lower, show that one instead.” You can use it on the Results page and on the Opt-in Gate, for every quiz type except Survey.
To set it up:
- Open your quiz’s Results page in the Thrive Architect editor.
- Add the Dynamic Content element to the page.
- For Number, Percentage, or Right/Wrong quizzes, choose how many equal score intervals you want (up to 25) and click Create new dynamic content intervals. You can fine-tune them later with Split and Range, or import intervals you’ve already built on another page. For Category quizzes, a separate version is created automatically for each category.
- Select each interval or category and build its content just like any other Thrive Architect content – text, images, buttons, and so on.
When someone reaches the page, Thrive Quiz Builder checks which interval their score falls into, or which category they got, and shows that version’s content. For more ways to design this page, see How to Customize Your Quiz Results Page.
Example: Displaying the Result Inside a Dynamic Content Block
A common setup is combining both tools: use Dynamic Content to change the surrounding message, and show the actual result within it. Inside the version built for your highest score range, you could add a Text element with:
Congratulations, you scored %result%! That puts you in our top tier.
For a Category quiz, you could write:
Your strongest trait is [tqb_quiz_result].
Troubleshooting Common Display and Functionality Issues
Quiz issues tend to be case-by-case, so there’s no single checklist that covers everything. That said, a few patterns come up often enough that they’re worth checking first.
The Opt-in Gate form doesn’t redirect where you expected. On the Opt-in Gate, the quiz always continues to its next step after someone submits the form, whatever the form’s own after-submit action is set to. To send people to another page after the quiz, use the quiz’s redirect settings instead. See How to Configure Quiz Redirect Settings and How to Use the Opt-in Gate in Thrive Quiz Builder.
A page doesn’t show up when choosing a redirect. The redirect setting uses a search box rather than a dropdown. Type at least 3 characters of the page title to see results. Only published posts, pages, and Thrive Apprentice lessons and modules appear, so publish the page first if it’s still a draft.
Quiz results inside a Thrive Apprentice assessment. When a quiz is used as an assessment in Thrive Apprentice, it’s graded automatically: Survey quizzes always pass, Right/Wrong quizzes pass at 50% correct or higher, Category quizzes pass or fail based on the categories you mark as passing, and Number and Percentage quizzes are compared to the passing grade you set.
The quiz gets stuck on a question. Each answer is sent to your site in the background through WordPress’s admin-ajax.php file. If the quiz freezes partway through, check whether a caching, security, or “reduce server load” setting is blocking or delaying requests to admin-ajax.php.
Known issue, already resolved: Thrive Architect’s built-in optimization feature, Project Lightspeed (unrelated to the third-party LiteSpeed Cache plugin), had a bug that could make elements set to show only on desktop, tablet, or mobile appear on the wrong devices – including on quiz pages. This was fixed in Thrive Architect 11.0.0.1. If your quiz pages were affected, update, then open each affected page and save it again.
Integrating with Thrive Automator, Thrive Leads, and Your Email Service
Thrive Automator: Thrive Quiz Builder connects to Thrive Automator through a single trigger, User completes quiz. It only fires when someone finishes the quiz, not when they abandon it partway. You can use these quiz fields in your automation: Quiz score (if numeric), Quiz result (if text), Quiz questions and answers, Quiz title, Quiz type, and Quiz email field. Answer tags and individual category scores aren’t available as fields.
Thrive Leads: There’s no separate Thrive Leads integration inside Thrive Quiz Builder. The Opt-in Gate (and optionally the Results page) uses the same Lead Generation element available throughout Thrive Architect, so an opt-in captured there works just like one on any other Thrive Architect page.
Tagging contacts in your email service: You don’t need Automator to segment contacts by their answers. When you attach tags to answers in the question editor, the tags from the answers a visitor chose are added to them automatically in your email service, as long as the quiz’s Lead Generation form is connected to a service that supports tags. You can also turn on Send quiz result as tag to tag contacts with their result. For the full setup, see How to Build Tagged Answers for Audience Segmentation.
Thrive Apprentice: You can also use quiz results to unlock course content with the Thrive Quiz Result drip condition in Thrive Apprentice.
Optimizing Quiz Performance
Each part of a quiz – the splash page, questions, Opt-in Gate, and results – is loaded step by step in the background as the visitor moves through it. A few things affect how fast that feels:
- Send quiz answers one at a time. This option in Thrive Quiz Builder’s settings is off by default, which is the faster setting. Turning it on makes Thrive Quiz Builder process each answer individually, which is slower.
- Answer feedback display time. If your quiz highlights answers or shows feedback after each question, that display time adds a short pause before the next question. Keep it brief if speed matters.
- Caching and security plugins. Make sure they aren’t blocking or delaying
admin-ajax.phprequests, since every quiz step depends on them.
