In this article, you’ll learn how to add LiveChat to your Thrive Theme Builder website so you can provide real-time customer support directly on your site.
What Is LiveChat?
LiveChat is a customer support tool that adds a chat widget to your website, allowing visitors to communicate with you (or your support team) in real time. The chat widget typically appears as a small icon in the bottom-right corner of every page.
Adding LiveChat to Your Site
There are two ways to add LiveChat to a Thrive Theme Builder website:
Method 1: Using the LiveChat WordPress Plugin (Recommended)
- In the WordPress admin, go to Plugins > Add New.
- Search for LiveChat.
- Install and activate the LiveChat – WP live chat plugin for WordPress plugin.
- After activation, click on the LiveChat menu item in the WordPress admin sidebar.
- Sign in to your LiveChat account (or create one if you don’t have one).
- Complete the setup wizard to connect your LiveChat account.
- The chat widget automatically appears on every page of your site.
Method 2: Using the Script Manager
If you prefer not to install the LiveChat plugin, you can add the LiveChat tracking code manually:
- Log in to your LiveChat account.
- Go to Settings > Channels > Website > Install LiveChat.
- Copy the JavaScript tracking code.
- In the WordPress admin, go to Thrive Dashboard > Thrive Theme Builder > Analytics & Scripts > Manage Scripts.
- Paste the LiveChat code into the Body (Footer) Scripts section.
- Click Save.
The chat widget now appears on every page. Placing the script in the footer ensures it loads after the page content, minimizing any impact on page speed.
Customizing the Chat Widget Appearance
LiveChat’s visual settings are managed in the LiveChat dashboard, not in Thrive Theme Builder:
- Log in to your LiveChat account.
- Go to Settings > Chat widget > Customization.
- Adjust the widget’s:
- Position — Bottom-right or bottom-left of the screen.
- Color — Match your brand colors.
- Greeting message — The initial message visitors see.
- Language — Match your site’s language.
- Save your changes. The updates appear on your site automatically.
Controlling Where LiveChat Appears
By default, LiveChat appears on every page. To limit where it appears:
Using LiveChat’s Built-In Settings
- In the LiveChat dashboard, go to Settings > Chat widget > Visibility.
- Configure page rules to show or hide the widget on specific pages.
Using Page-Level Scripts
If you only want LiveChat on specific pages (instead of site-wide):
- Remove the LiveChat code from the site-wide Manage Scripts section.
- Open the specific page or post where you want LiveChat.
- In the WordPress editor, scroll to the Custom Scripts metabox.
- Paste the LiveChat code into the Body (Footer) Scripts field.
- Update the page.
The chat widget now appears only on that specific page.
Best Practices
- Place the script in the footer — Chat widgets don’t need to load immediately. Placing them in Body (Footer) Scripts keeps your page loading fast.
- Use the WordPress plugin when possible — The official LiveChat plugin handles updates automatically and includes additional features like visitor tracking in the WordPress admin.
- Match the widget to your brand — Customize the chat widget’s colors in the LiveChat dashboard to match your Thrive Theme Builder site’s branding.
- Set business hours — Configure offline hours in LiveChat so visitors see a contact form instead of a chat window when your team isn’t available.
