Enabling Course Level Grading in Thrive Apprentice

Do you want to grade your students with a final course score based on their assessments? You can now let Thrive Apprentice consider all the assessments and calculate an overall course grade.

In this article, we’ll see how you can enable Thrive Apprentice to do that and the following settings.

Enabling Overall Grade for a Course

To enable course-level grading for a course, open your WordPress admin area, navigate to Thrive Dashboard -> Thrive Apprentice, and click on the course you want to edit.

On the course page, click the Course Completion tab to manage the settings.

Under the Course Completion tab, click the slider beside “Award an overall grade for this course” to enable course-level grading.

This will enable overall grading for the course and let you manage the following settings.

Setting Assessment Weighting in a Course

After you enable overall grading for the course, the section expands to give you more options to manage the weighting for assessments in the course.

Under Assessment weighting, you can select the weightage you want to give each assessment in the course. This weightage will then calculate the overall score accordingly.

The available options are:

  • Weight all assessments equally
  • Manually weight assessments
  • Hardcore grade for all students

Choosing to weigh all assessments equally gives them equal weightage, and the overall calculations are done accordingly. You can choose to include or assessments you want to distribute the weightage between.

In this particular example, I had three published assessments for this course; therefore, I see them listed below and the weightage given to each.

You can click the minus (-) icon beside each assessment to decide whether you want to count them while the overall grade is calculated.

When an assessment is excluded from the overall grade, its weightage is distributed among the remaining assessments in the list.

When you manually weigh assessments, you’ll see a list of all the assessments in the course, which appears below. Here, you can select the weight you want to give each one.

You can also include or exclude assessments from being considered for the overall grading. The minus and plus icons beside each assessment will let you manage that.

Regarding the weightage, you’ll need to decide the weightage you want to give each assessment. To do so, click Manual and edit the percentage in the respective box.

When you select Manual and adjust the weightage for one assessment, the weightage for the others is adjusted automatically.

When you select to give a Hardcore grade for all students, you can add a comment or label you want to display as a grade. This can be anything like “Passed!”, “Exceptional performance!” or anything similar.

Displaying a Grade

Once you select the weightage you want to assign to each assessment, you can choose the format in which you want the grades displayed.

By default, all the grades are out of 100.

The available display formats are:

  • Percentage: This displays an overall percentage based on the assessments in the course.
  • Score: This displays the total score calculated based on the assessments in the course.
  • Category: Display overall grades based on a student’s score or percentage range.

When you select Category under the Display grade as an option, you can set ranges and the labels you want to display for them.

To edit the range to edit categories, click the Edit Ranges button.

When you click Edit ranges, you’ll see a popup where you can

  • Choose whether you want to display equal ranges: By clicking the slider.
  • Edit the range: By entering numbers in the boxes.
  • Edit labels: By entering them in the given fields.
  • Add ranges: Using the plus (+) icons before and after a present range.
  • Remove a range: By clicking the bin icon beside it.

Once you set the ranges, click Save.

Issuing Certificates Based on the Grading

After you’ve enabled the overall grading for a course, you can set it to issue a certificate only when a student achieves a particular grade.

This can be done by enabling the slider beside Issue course completion certificate.

The first option in this section lets you select the condition based on which you’d want to issue a certificate.

The conditions are based on how you’ve set the Display grade as option.

When you select to display grade as a percentage or score, you’ll have to enter the minimum score or percentage, which, when scored, should trigger a certificate issue.

Likewise, when you choose to display the grade as a category, a dropdown menu lets you select the level to which you want to issue the certificate.

Presenting a Course Grade on the Course Completion Page

To present the grade on the course completion page, click the link “Edit with Thrive Architect” to edit the Course Completion Page.

When you open the course completion page in the Thrive Architect editor, click the plus (+) icon in the right column to add a Text element. This Text element is used as a placeholder to display the score or grade a student has received.

After dragging the text element on the page, edit the content and place the cursor to where you want to add the dynamic text.

After selecting the text, click the dynamic icon in the floating bar.

When you click the dynamic icon, you can select the Dynamic source in the next box.

Under Dynamix text, select Apprentice Course and select the option as Course grade or Course numerical result.

  • Course grade: This will display a numerical value if you’ve selected Percentage or Score under the Display grade option. If you’ve selected Category, it will display the label suitable to the range in which the student’s score falls.
  • Course numerical result: This will display a numerical value if you’ve selected Percentage or Score under the Display grade option.

In this example, when I select Course grade, you see that it gets added where I placed the cursor in the content. This is in the editor. The page will add the course grade dynamically on the front end.

Similarly, you can use the Course numerical result if you’ve chosen a Percentage or Score to be displayed as the grade.

We’ve just seen how you can enable overall grading for a course, manage assessment weightage, and display it in the front end.

Next, here’s a document that will help you create course funnels using Thrive Apprentice.
