How to Use Lead Groups β€” Complete Guide

Would you like to keep every form for the same campaign organized in one place instead of scattered across your site? In this guide, we will walk you through creating and targeting a Lead Group, adding forms to it, testing and duplicating its contents, and the tools available in its detail view. All you need is Thrive Leads installed and activated on your WordPress site.

Viewing Your Lead Groups

Go to Thrive Leads » My Forms and select the Lead Groups tab to see every group you have created, along with its impressions, conversions, conversion rate, and status.

With Sort By set to Latest, the default, Active groups are listed first and every other group follows. In each part, the most recently updated group is at the top. Editing one of a group’s forms counts as an update.

Under each group’s name, you see how many forms it has and, when a test is running, how many A/B tests are in progress.

Note: Click Group conditions on any row to see or change which pages that group’s forms are allowed to appear on. See how to set up Lead Group conditions in Thrive Leads for a full walkthrough of every targeting tab. Use Lead Group Priorities, above the list, if you need to control which group takes precedence when more than one could show on the same page β€” Thrive Leads checks Lead Groups in that priority order and only displays the highest matching one.

On the Lead Group Priorities screen, running A/B tests also appear under each group’s name. When you expand a group there, forms that are part of a running test show a “Test running” status instead of “Published”.

Creating a New Lead Group

  1. Click Create New Lead Group in the top right corner.
  2. Enter a name in the Name your new lead group field.
  3. Click Create Lead Group.

A new Lead Group starts out empty, so you will still need to add a form to it or move an existing one in.

Adding a Form to a Lead Group

  1. Inside the Lead Group, click Add new form.
  2. Choose a form type, such as In-Content, Ribbon, or a ThriveBox overlay type.
  3. Open the new form’s Design tab to build it in the embedded Thrive Architect editor.

A Lead Group can contain more than one form, including more than one form type, which is what makes A/B testing across form types possible in the next section.

Viewing a Lead Group’s Forms and Tests

  1. Click the arrow beside a Lead Group’s name to expand it.

The expanded view splits the group’s content into tabs: Active forms and A/B tests – In Progress. An Archived Tests tab appears once the group has finished tests.

The Active forms tab lists standalone forms that are not currently part of a running A/B test. Once a form is entered into a test, it moves to the A/B tests – In Progress tab instead, and finished tests move to Archived Tests. You can test two designs of the same form type against each other, or add two different form types to the group (for example a Ribbon and an In-Content form) and test them against each other to see which format converts better. See how to use A/B testing in Thrive Leads for the full walkthrough.

In the A/B tests – In Progress tab, each form in a test shows its form type under its name. That makes formats such as Popup and In-Content easy to tell apart.

Duplicating a Lead Group

You can duplicate an entire Lead Group, including all of its form types, designs, and targeting rules, in a few clicks.

  1. On the Lead Group’s row, click the ⋮ menu and choose Duplicate.
Lead group row menu open with Rename, Group report, Archived forms, Duplicate, and Delete group, and an arrow on Duplicate
  2. A new group appears in the list, named (Copy) – Original Name. A second copy of the same group is named (Copy 1) – Original Name.

Duplicating copies every form type and its design, the group’s targeting conditions, connected integrations, and custom CSS. Archived forms and performance data aren’t carried over. Impressions, conversions, and conversion rate all start at zero, and a running A/B test isn’t copied.

The copy’s forms start hidden, so you can review everything first. Its active form shows Enable visibility instead of Published until you turn it on.

Duplicating a Form Type to Another Lead Group

You can also duplicate a single form, rather than the whole group, either within the same Lead Group or into a different one.

  1. On the form’s row, click the ⋮ menu and choose Duplicate.
  2. In the Duplicate form window, pick the group to copy the form to. The form’s current group is marked Same group.
  3. Click Duplicate to create the copy.
Duplicate form window with the current lead group selected and marked Same group, a notice about forms of the same type, and an arrow on the Duplicate button

The copy is named after the original with (Copy) at the end. If the target group already has an active form of that type, the window says so, and the copy is added as inactive. It won’t receive traffic until you start an A/B test or remove the original. Duplicating a form into its own group is a quick way to set up an A/B test of 2 designs.

That’s it! You now know how to create, populate, test, and duplicate the Lead Groups your forms belong to. Next, see how to set up Lead Group conditions in Thrive Leads to control exactly where a group’s forms appear, or how to use A/B testing in Thrive Leads to compare variants within a group.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens to a form’s display rules when I move it into a Lead Group?

The form keeps its own Display Rules tab settings. The Lead Group’s conditions apply on top of those, since a group’s conditions control which pages any form in that group is allowed to appear on at all.

Can a form belong to more than one Lead Group?

A form is assigned to one Lead Group at a time, from the Add form to a group step when you create it or from the Lead Group tab in the form editor.

Does duplicating a Lead Group copy its performance data?

No. Duplicating copies the forms, designs, targeting rules, integrations, and custom CSS, but impressions, conversions, conversion rate, and any A/B test progress all start over at zero on the copy.
