You receive an email, click on the link and you see...
An opt-in form.
Really? How annoying is that?
They contacted you through email, they have your contact information. Why would you have to do the effort to opt-in AGAIN?
Click. Window closed. Conversion lost.
As a subscriber you understand how irritating this is, but as a marketer you've probably done this to your own subscribers at least a few times. Because sometimes you want your subscribers to opt-in again, no?
Well, yes and no.
You want the RESULT of your subscribers opting in again. You want them to be added to a different list, receive a series of follow-up emails, get tagged, etc.
Good news, you can have the best of both worlds!
Thrive Leads is packed with one of the most powerful one-click sign up features: Signup Segue.
You get what you want and your subscribers are happy too. A true Win-Win.
Let's take a look at when using the Signup Segue feature will help you boost your conversions.
You Should Use Signup Segue To:
1. Get Loads Of Webinar Sign-Ups
Webinars are the first situation that comes to mind when thinking about asking to opt-in again.
This is mainly because you want to get people on your webinar list to be able to send reminder emails only to those who showed interest in the webinar.
Signup Segue allows you to add your subscribers to your webinar list in one click in the background, so they do not even notice they have been added to this list.
Desired result:
Get your subscribers onto a special webinar list so that you can send them reminder, replay and promotional emails.
How to:
- Create a Signup Segue link that's connected to your favorite webinar solution and/or to a specific list, group or tag in your email provider.
- Use the conditional redirect options to send visitors to a "thank you for subscribing" page, a replay page or a "sorry the event is over" page. You can check out this post for detailed instructions.
The email link message:
“Simply click here to claim your spot.”
2. Pamper Your Subscribers With Freebies
You've just created a value packed opt-in offer and wrote all the follow up emails that will lead into the sale of your product or service.
You want people who are following you already to know about this!
They deserve to be treated extra special and sending them to an opt-in page would not make them feel that way.
With the Singup Segue link, you can send your subscribers immediately to the download page or to the free report and in the background they will be added to a new list, get a tag or be added to a group.
Desired result:
Giving the opt-in offer to your subscribers, while still being able to trigger the follow-up sequence.
How to:
- Create a Signup Segue link that's connected to your email provider and send people to a different list, group or add a tag that will start the follow-up email sequence.
- Send the visitors immediately to the download page of your opt-in offer.
The email link message:
“Click here to download this new awesome guide.”
3. Rock Partnerships
When you're doing an (affiliate) promotion, you want a maximum of your subscribers to opt-in to your partner's list.
That's why you should make it as easy as possible for your subscribers to join your partner's list.
You can write an email in your voice and you do not have to count on their opt-in landing page to do the job.
Just make 100% sure your subscribers understand that by clicking on the link they will opt-in for another list and will receive messages from this person.
Desired result:
Have your subscribers join your partner's list
How to:
- Create a Signup Segue link that's connected to your partner's email provider.
- Send the visitors to a personalized thank you page so that you can keep the messaging congruent or send them to the access page of the offer they were promised.
The email message:
Click here to get access to the partner's amazing resources, you'll get immediate access to the offer and will be receiving training emails from this partner.
4. Clean Your List
After a while some people will stop opening your emails, maybe because they changed their primary email address or simply because the topic is not interesting to them anymore.
But many of them will not unsubscribe, they'll simply delete your emails or worse mark them as SPAM.
This sends a negative signal to spam filters and can hurt your delivery rates.
That's why it's important you delete inactive subscribers from time to time and clean your list.
Not only can it help your delivery rates but it will also lower your costs because you'll stop paying for useless contacts.
Your email provider should give you the possibility to filter subscribers based on their behavior. You can filter for people who have not opened your emails for the past couple of months (depending on the frequency of your emails). These are the people you want to delete from your list.
To make sure you do not delete anybody who still wants to be on the list, send an email after deleting them with a Signup Segue link in it.
When they click on the link, they stay on your list.
In essence they are opting in again, but they do not see that.
Desired result:
Give contacts you manually unsubscribed an easy way to stay on your list.
How to:
- Create a Signup Segue link that's connected to your email provider's newsletter list.
- Send the visitors to a personalized thank you page where you can re-engage by giving links to interesting content on your website.
The email message:
You have been removed from the mailing list. If you'd like to make sure you get our future blog posts and updates, you can do by clicking here.
5. Segmentation & Anticipation
Segmenting your list can be super powerful because this allows to send highly relevant messages to targeted subscribers.
Imagine having a new product or service idea in mind, but before spending hours creating it you want to make sure there is demand.
Create a simple email to explain your new idea and have people click on a Signup Segue link if they want to learn more about it.
Behind the scenes you can now add these people to a "waiting list". You'll immediately see if the demand is high enough for you to pursue that idea and you'll already have a list of people who showed interest.
Desired result:
Create sub-groups in your email list to communicate more effectively with your different subscribers.
How to:
- Create a Signup Segue link that's triggers a segmentation of your list. Depending on the email service you use, you can use a tag or create a new list.
- Send the visitors to a personalized thank you page where they can learn more about the topic they showed interest in.
The email link message:
- Click here to learn more about XYZ
- Click here if you're a {subgroup: eg SEO consultant}

A Note About API Connections
To be able to use the Singup Segue feature, you have to integrate via API to one of the many services we connect with.
It's Your Turn To Stop Asking To Opt-in
Are you using Signup Segue already? Did you find another smart use case? Do you have any question? Let us know in the comments below!
What kind of wild sorcery is this? Big fan of not having to opt in again!
🙂 Happy you like it David
So cool 😀
Right?! 😀
Holy crap. This is good. I knew how it works but these examples really put a spotlight on how it can be used. Good job!
Robert
I’m glad these examples gave you some new ideas.
Yeah, this is a really cool feature. I’m using some of the Things you mention.
Now I’m gonna do an affiliate promotion for a new product launch… so the nº 3 it’s a really good idea, but It’s not that easy to implement.
I mean; If I have to create a new integration, I have to ask my partner (I’m just one of his affiliates ) for some sensitive data (password) to create the api conection, and by the way, if both are using aweber how to do it? I think thriveleads only allow 1 connection for aweber.
I gonna see if I can get this done, but I feel that one it’s not that easy…
The other ones are easy to implement and work like nothing else on the market, so good job. Keep doing things like this.
Hi Borja,
Yes it is the most tricky one, you need a good relationship to set this up. You could ask for API key instead of their password to set up the API connection though.
And yes it is true that Thrive Leads allows one connection per service so if you’re already using the same provider this would not work.
As you said, the others are easy to implement because it only involves your own email provider and website 🙂
Hanne, this is terrific! I typically use double optin in Aweber, so will it require a confirmation email to move them from one list to another? I’m sure I can ask Aweber, but just checking since I’m here…
Hi Mike,
So I’m not sure what Aweber does exactly, but for this purpose I would for sure not use double opt-in (these people already are on your list and accepted to receive your emails).
Also tagging might be an option instead of adding to a new list.
Awesome! I can now tag subscribers properly using different email service providers. Woot! =)
That’s right Angelito!
Had no idea what that was for. Thank you for emailing out these tutorials.
You’re welcome Trish
Yup – so many things to learn when we become members. If only there was a video that explained every feature.. just kidding.
THX for explaining this with specific examples and copywriting examples: turns the post from an explanation into a tool.
d
Happy to hear that David 🙂 And that one video would be MASSIVE 😉
Do you still support Mautic? I liked your link above (https://thrivethemes.com/integrations/) and don’t see Mautic on the list.
Hi Brad,
Yes we do, you can find it in the email marketing services 🙂
This is a really fantastic feature and so convenient for those already on my list. I use Active Campaign and like to move subscribers from one automation to another based on their interest. This is a great way to do it. I am curious though … I am reading the post on Headlines [https://thrivethemes.com/6-headline-mistakes/]. I’m logged in yet when I try to download the Bonus headline templates, I get an opt-in form. Wouldn’t this be a way to use the seque link? Or does it only work in emails?
Hi Al,
Yes this will only work when people click from a link in the email immediately. Not for people on your website.
For that you can use the Smartlinks feature
Thanks for the awesome info, I will do my A/B/C testing….
You’re welcome Monte
Great feature would would be even more amazing if you could somehow combine it with the Smart Links feature
Hi Chris,
What exactly would you like to do by combining those two?
This is awesome!! Especially now that im planning to hold a series of webinars. Super thank you for this.
Glad this came at the right time for you Nathaniel
I especially like #5, pretty genius. I’d be careful with #4 though, as some people use various e-mail software which pulls from their gmail (that won’t mark it as read in your e-mail service provider).
Good to know Kyle.
Perhaps you guys might consider unbundling this feature from Thrive Leads? I do have access to this one-click segmentation functionality through a little-known WP plugin but I’d rather have bought from you guys. I use TCB… I’m just not likely to become a TL user in the future as it’s bundled with all your themes. I’m committed to Genesis Theme to the tune of 40+ learning hours and will not invest that time again elsewhere. Just a thought anyway – I do see the superiority of a continuity model.
Hi Luke, you do not have to use a Thrive theme or be a Thrive Member to use Thrive Leads.
You can continue using Genesis and use Thrive Leads as a standalone plugin.
The membership gives you access to all of our plugins and themes, but all of them can be used and acquired separately if you wish.
What if the client is not yet on your list? will they see the ordinary opt-in form instead?
Hi Dan,
The Signup Segue feature is based on a link you send through email so those people are in your list already.
If you want to show different content to your subscribers and your non-subscribers, take a look at the Smartlinks feature this is probably what you’re looking for!
Hanne, your scarcity plugin requires optin for existing subscribers. Is there a chance you could combine it’s functionality with this Thrive Leads function?
This is (one of) the feature(s) of my dreams. I wish more people used this! Love <3
I agree! Now when I have to opt-in again for a webinar or so I’m always annoyed 😀
Can signup segue link with ZOOM?
Hi Tripp, Zoom is currently not supported in the API connections, so the Signup Segue feature would not work.
I’m one of those that though interested loses on the way of being redirected from one optin to the other. I adore this new genial bypass
Happy you like this Anna!
Is it possible to integrate a service with this that is not in the support list? By the way, what’s the difference between generating these links with ThriveLeads or with the autoresponder itself? What extra feature do I have if people sign up via a ThriveLeads generated link? Thanks! 🙂
Hi Andras,
You can only use the services that are supported through API for this.
Not all services offer a one click signup link so that would be the first reason to use Thrive Leads 😉 but also because of the conditional redirect. Eg. You can make sure that after your webinar people go to the replay page instead of the thank you page etc.
What I’m worried about is people who click the link for more information, but then accidentally get signed up for it.
That’s happened to me before and I don’t like it.
It seems like right now there are only two options:
1. open email > click link to sign up
2. open email > click link to go to page > fill in form on page
Is there a happy medium, like a way to sign up by clicking on a link, going to a page, and then just clicking a button instead of filling out a form?
Hi Arthur,
I think the key here is communication.
If the link says: “Click here to automatically sign up for this event” there will be no surprises 🙂
I am a fan of your products but the TA really made me stop using TT products because of the learning curve, is there a way to buy this separately and some other products?
Hi Gabriel,
I’m sorry to hear you feel TA has too much of a learning curve. I hope we’ll be able to win you over again. That being said, yes you can buy any of our products separately in this case Thrive Leads.
Thanks a lot Hanne, very interesting post.
However, following you I’ve tried to implement this system on our website, but I’m experiencing some issue I wanted to share to see if you (or anybody else in the community) could help.
I’m using the sign up segue links with aweber, but I get errors due to invalid name/email fields. It seems the name error can be solved by changing the variable in the thrive link from [name] to [!name], but the same doesn’t work for the [email], at least in my hands.
Could anybody help? Thanks a lot in advance.
Cheers,
andrea
Hi Andrea,
For Aweber, you would have to change the [NAME] and [EMAIL] to {!firstname} and {!email}
You can see the full instructions here: https://thrivethemes.com/tkb_item/how-to-use-the-thrive-leads-signup-segue-feature-one-click-signups/
Hope that helps!
What happens if someone forwards their personalized email to a friend who is NOT on your list? If they click the button to instant register, their email will not be captured, correct? Is there a way to conditionally set the redirect page so that if the email parameter is empty they get the registration page?
No, not at the moment
