How to Sell Online Courses with Thrive Apprentice & WooCommerce

It's time to set up Thrive Apprentice - Thrive Themes' featureful courseware plugin.

Over the next few lessons, you'll:

  • Set your online school's overall design via the Thrive Apprentice School Wizard
  • Select global settings
  • Create a course
  • Customize your school templates
  • Create a product

For more in-depth information about specific features, head on over to our knowledge base.

Let's get started!

You'll need to create a course listing page, which will display all or your future available courses. Then, you’ll set the overall design for your online school. In the School Wizard, you'll be asked to choose your fully-customizable design templates:

  • Logo
  • Brand color
  • Header and footer layout
  • Homepage
  • Course overview page
  • Menu
  • Module overview pages
  • Navigation Sidebar
  • Text, video and audio lesson

Once you're done in the School Wizard, it's time to configure the Thrive Apprentice settings.

In the General settings tab, you'll have the option to change your courses page, allow auto-login for new WordPress account customers and enable comments.

Email Templates tab - You'll be able to customize the email that gets sent out to new customers along with their login details.

Labels & translations - Edit the Access restrictions labels and even add new ones to indicate which courses are free, for subscribers only or premium. You can even change labels on buttons, course navigation and more.

Login & Access Restriction tab - Create and customize your login page to suit your business needs and brand aesthetic, while also deciding what happens when or if a user tries to access your product / course without the necessary permission.
Side note: Set access restriction rules specific to individual products (not as default for all) in the Products tab.

Easy enough, right? Let’s proceed with creating your courses!

  • What wasn’t entirely clear WRT individual cours access is how it interacts with the Global Access settings.

    Here are several questions:
    1) If you want to have individual access, can you still leave global access in place and have that work for all courses that don’t have individual access defined?
    2) If you have individual access, can you use a single login/registration page, but have individually defined redirects upon restriction?
    3) Are there any passable variables that occur from a failed login?

    • Hi Carl,

      1. Yes indeed. The course level settings will overwrite the Apprentice level settings.
      2. Not sure if I’m understanding correctly but if you set the Apprentice settings to Login/Registration page when someone tries to access AND you toggle the “Redirect user to content they were trying to access after login” to on then when someone tries to access a course, they will see the login form and then they will be redirected to the course.

  • What if you have two audiences to direct courses? Like Internal courses for the company members (free) and external courses (paid) for customers? Do I need two courses pages?

    • You could do that 🙂
You can create a page called “Company Courses” and add a course list element on the page and filter it to only show the company courses.
Then you could have another page which is simply the courses overview page and filter this to not show the company courses.

  • I am confused. I get no welcome screen as shown in the University video, and I see no wizard. I have Apprentice version 4.6.
My opening page has 6 choices (Courses, Designs, Customers, Products and Membership, Settings and Help).
I can proceed, of course, but should I consider the University video outdated then?

    • Hi Carsten,
My guess is that you’ve already set up Thrive Apprentice before watching this video. No problem though, you can simply follow along anyways.
If at any point you want to find the wizard, go to the design tab, click on edit design (on the visually editable design) and then you’ll see the wizard button in that screen.
