Should I Edit My Template Using Thrive Theme Builder or the Page/Post Using Thrive Architect?

Are you wondering whether to customize your overall site design or just make changes to a specific page or post? Understanding when to use Thrive Theme Builder or Thrive Architect helps you choose the right tool for your needs and ensures you edit your website in the most effective way.

In this article, we’ll show you the difference between Thrive Theme Builder and Thrive Architect and which editor to select to edit different elements on your website.

Understanding the Thrive Theme Builder and Thrive Architect

Both Thrive Theme Builder and Thrive Architect allow you to customize your WordPress site visually. Here’s a quick overview:

  • Thrive Theme Builder: A powerful tool for creating and editing global templates like headers, footers, category pages and page templates. Changes made here affect all instances of that template across your entire site. It’s ideal for site-wide consistency.
  • Thrive Architect (Page/Post Editor): The visual editor used for creating and customizing individual pages and posts. Changes only affect the specific page/post where you’re working. It’s suited for unique layouts and content variations.

When to Use Thrive Theme Builder vs. Thrive Architect

When you’ve logged into your website and open a published page or a page preview, you’ll see an option to edit it with Thrive in the admin bar on the top.

When you click on Edit with Thrive, you’ll see two options to select from – Edit with Thrive Architect and Edit Theme Template – “Title Banner – Call to Action”.

This is where you must select where you want to edit the page or post.

Choose Thrive Theme Builder when:

  • You need to update a common element across your entire site (e.g., changing your logo, updating your site-wide font).
  • You want to maintain a consistent brand identity.
  • You’re working on the overall structure of your site (e.g., creating new category templates).

Choose Thrive Architect when:

  • You only need to make changes to styling/content on a single page or post.
  • You want maximum flexibility and control over the layout of a specific page.
  • You’re creating unique landing pages.

Depending on the editor you select – Thrive Theme Builder or Thrive Architect, here are a few documents that’ll help you edit elements on your website and the page.
