10+ Years In: These Are the Best WordPress Themes I’d Use Again

Looking for the best WordPress themes in 2025? I’ve been there (more times than I care to admit).

When I moved away from hosted platforms and started building my own WordPress websites over a decade ago, I loved theme shopping. I’d spend hours scrolling through demo sites, picturing how amazing my own site could look. Every theme seemed like the one.

But then I’d install it… and that beautiful demo? It looked nothing like what I got.

I wasn’t a total beginner but I wasn’t a developer either. And I quickly learned the hard truth: most themes look great on the surface, but are:

  • Frustrating to set up (especially if you’re not a tech expert),

  • Hard to customize unless you want to edit code or install five extra plugins,

  • And nowhere near as fast or mobile-friendly as they claim to be.

I ended up wasting over $400 on themes that didn’t deliver (forgive me, I was new).

Since then, I’ve tested and built sites with dozens of themes across real projects: blogs, stores, personal brands, portfolios, membership sites, and more. And in this guide, I’ve narrowed it down to a handful of WordPress themes that actually work — not just in theory, but in real life.

Whether you're after something free and lightweight, conversion-focused, or fully customizable without code, you’ll find a solid pick below.

Let’s dive in.

Compare the Best WordPress Themes at a Glance

If you’re anything like I was when I first started building my own sites, you probably want a theme that just works — something fast, flexible, and not a total nightmare to set up.

But with so many options out there (and way too many that look great in the demo but fall apart in real life), it can be hard to tell what’s actually worth your time or money.

That’s why I put together this comparison table — to give you a quick, no-fluff overview of the best WordPress themes for 2025, based on real use, not just marketing claims.

Here’s how they stack up in terms of setup, speed, flexibility, and pricing.

My Selection Process: How I Chose These WordPress Themes

If you, like me, have ever fallen for a beautiful theme demo — only to spend hours trying to recreate it and end up with something that looks nothing like the preview — I feel your pain.

That’s exactly why I put this list together.

These aren’t just the most popular themes out there. They’re the ones I’ve personally used (and re-used) on real websites — for myself, for clients, and for projects with tight timelines and tighter budgets.

Here’s what I paid attention to:

  • Quick, frustration-free setup
Can you install the theme and have something that resembles a real website in under an hour?

  • Starter templates that actually help
Do the included layouts give you a usable starting point — or do you still have to build everything from scratch?

  • Customization without code
Can you change colors, fonts, and layouts without touching CSS or needing five extra plugins?

  • Plugin compatibility
Does the theme play nicely with essential tools like WooCommerce, Elementor, or Thrive Architect?

  • Speed and mobile performance
Will your site load quickly and look good on any device, without needing advanced performance tweaks?

  • Actual value for what you pay
Does the theme give you what you need out of the box, or are key features locked behind paywalls and upsells?

If a theme looked good but made life harder in practice, I cut it. The ones that made it here? They’re the ones I’d confidently recommend to anyone building (or rebuilding) their WordPress site in 2025.

The 15 Best WordPress Themes for 2025 (Tried, Tested & Worth Your Time)

Over 40% of all websites run on WordPress, but most of them never reach their full potential — often because they’re built on clunky, bloated, or overly complex themes.

Choosing the right theme isn’t just about aesthetics. It directly affects:

  • Your site speed (which impacts SEO and conversions),

  • Your visitor experience (especially on mobile),

  • And how easily you can make updates without relying on a developer.

This list includes the themes I’ve personally tested on real sites — not just demos. Whether you’re building your first blog or rebuilding an eCommerce site, these are the themes that actually deliver in 2025.

If you want a custom WordPress theme to make your WordPress website stand out from the rest – you need Thrive Theme Builder from Thrive Themes.

What I Like About Thrive Themes

Thrive Themes gives you a selection of plugins to achieve specific goals for setting up and running your business. When it comes to creating a WordPress theme, you get Thrive Theme Builder, a theme-building plugin that makes it super easy for you to create a customized structure for your website.

I’m a big fan of the theme builder’s setup wizard, which helps you set up your site in 30 minutes (or even less). You also get a selection of high-quality themes to try out and customize to match your business’s brand.

Which means you aren’t getting a generic WordPress theme that will look like 100s of other sites out there. Instead, you get everything you need to make a website that is uniquely yours.

Ease of Use/Setup

Getting started with Thrive Theme Builder is really easy.

You don’t need to know HTML, CSS, or any other coding language to create an impressive custom theme. Thrive Themes has done all the technical work for you.

All you need to do is install and activate the plugin to get started.

Setting up your WordPress theme in Thrive Theme Builder is straightforward. From the dashboard, you can choose a theme, set up your site’s color scheme in one click, and configure your site’s structure in the Thrive Theme Builder Setup Wizard.

And speaking of the setup Wizard...

This is my favorite Thrive Theme Builder feature. Whenever I need to set up a new site, I can get my theme ready thanks to how straightforward and simple this setup wizard is.

All you need to do is click your way through each option and select templates for every part of your WordPress site — from your homepage, to your blog list page, default WordPress page, headers, footers, and more.

By the end of this process, your site will be ready to be customized — and it’ll take you less than 30 minutes. I don’t think it gets any easier than that.

Thrive Theme Builder in Action

āœ… Bonus: Thrive Theme Builder includes built-in speed optimization tools like Project Lightspeed and smart image compression — so your site loads fast on all devices, right out of the box.

Templates Availability

Another standout Thrive Theme Builder feature is its selection of themes. You don’t just get one multipurpose-theme template to try and customize.

Thrive Themes gives you a selection of theme template sets to choose from.

What’s so special about that, you might be asking?

Well, every theme you see here comes with a set of page templates to help you achieve a stellar site structure quickly.

And these premium themes look great just out the box.

Some of these WP themes are designed for specific purposes. Take Xpert, our theme for consultants and coaches.

Or Jaya, a beautiful theme for yoga instructors and studios

The beauty of these high-quality themes, however, is the fact that you can use any of them for any niche — regardless of what they were initially designed for.

Thrive Themes is intentional with the types of themes they give you. They make sure you have enough choice without feeling overwhelmed, so you can make the right choice and still have the freedom to create a unique website.

Which brings me to my next point...

Design Flexibility/Customization Options

The great thing about these themes is the fact that the initial design is just the start.

You get you total control over your website’s look and the design flexibility to turn any template into a unique page.

You get a remarkable level of customization with Spa. When setting it up in Thrive Theme Builder, you have the freedom to choose a main brand color, which will automatically set up your color scheme. You can also customize your site's typography and even fine-tune the page templates (homepage, blog page, etc.) to your exact liking. This may take a bit of time, but it's worth it.

Gif depicting the Smart Color functionality in Bookwise theme

With Smart Color Technology, you can change the color of your theme with one click.

This tool also has a ā€œTemplatesā€ section where you can hop in and create or modify any page template you chose using the Thrive Visual Editor.

Any changes you make here will be applied to your site immediately.

The Thrive Visual Editor

The Thrive Visual editor lets you drag and drop elements to create beautiful pages in minutes. No coding required! You can easily add a variety of conversion-focused elements to show off your products or services, and put your business in the best light.

If you want to get the most out of your design and increase your site’s chances of landing conversions, then you need to use Thrive Architect, our landing page builder. This tool works hand-in-hand with Thrive Theme Builder to produce a top tier website for your business.

Integrations

Thrive Theme Builder shines when it comes to integrations.

If you want to turn your website into a thriving online business that consistently brings in conversions — then you must try Thrive Suite, Thrive Themes’ suite of WordPress plugins that are focused on one thing: bringing you more sales and sign-ups.

Thrive Theme Builder also works well with a variety of growth tools, including All in One SEO for search engine optimization, MonsterInsights for Google Analytics, SmashBalloon for adding social media feeds to your site (or a Google Reviews feed), and more.

Thrive Theme Builder Pricing

You can purchase Thrive Theme Builder as a standalone plugin for $99 per year OR purchase it as a duo with Thrive Architect and have the ultimate website building pair for your platform. Pricing for this duo starts from $199 per year.

SeedProd is one of the best WordPress website builders with drag-and-drop functionality. Like Thrive Theme Builder, you can use this plugin to create your own custom WordPress theme and landing pages – without writing a single line of code.

What I Like About SeedProd

One thing I really like about this tool is how it gives you a large selection of focused templates to choose from. In addition to that, this tool's interface is user-friendly and especially great for new WordPress users who want to set up a solid WordPress website by themselves.

Ease of Use/Setup

SeedProd’s setup process is quick and straightforward — simply install the plugin after purchase, enter your license code, and start designing your new website.

First, you get a simple setup wizard that guides you through the initial configuration with clear instructions and options. This makes getting started extremely easy.

SeedProd's straightforward setup hub

This website building tool also provides you with a simple drag-and-drop editor to create and customize your webpages and make them your own.

There’s little to no learning curve, even for non-technical users. The builder's controls and customization options are straightforward.

āœ… SeedProd is fast-loading with responsive templates that adapt well to mobile screens and pass Core Web Vitals checks.

  • Checkout pages

  • eCommerce product pages

  • … and so much more

Design Flexibility/Customization Options

As I mentioned earlier, SeedProd provides a drag-and-drop page and theme builder that allows users to create custom page layouts with ease — and no coding knowledge.

Editing in SeedProd's drag-and-drop builder

The drag-and-drop page builder provides a real-time preview of changes, so you can easily see your design progress.

In addition to the pre-made template kits, SeedProd also provides a set of content blocks and design elements to spruce up your pages and give them a more personal touch.

3. Sydney

When I first tried Sydney, I wasn’t expecting much. You know, just another lightweight WordPress theme with a modern look. But a few hours in, I realized it struck a rare balance: beginner-friendly, visually clean, and just flexible enough to feel like your site could actually stand out.

What I Like About Sydney

I really appreciate how much control Sydney gives you without feeling overwhelming. The theme includes customization options for headers, footers, blog layouts, fonts, and colors — and if you upgrade to Pro, you get even more flexibility with extra Elementor widgets like pricing tables, timelines, and advanced headers.

It’s also one of the few themes in this price range that’s officially recommended by Elementor, and it shows. Everything works seamlessly, and WooCommerce integration is smooth, too — even the cart and shop page styling feels clean and intentional.

If you’re someone who wants a fast, flexible theme without diving into advanced builders or code, Sydney hits that sweet spot.

Ease of Use/Setup

This theme is genuinely beginner-friendly. If you’ve used the WordPress Customizer before, you’ll feel right at home. You can adjust fonts, colors, layouts, and global settings in real time — no coding required and no new interface to learn.

Starter Sites (demo templates) are quick to import, and even the free version gives you a usable, professional-looking layout. I was able to go from blank canvas to finished homepage in under an hour.

Template Availability

The free version of Sydney includes a small selection of Starter Sites (about 3–4), which are clean, modern, and focused mostly on business needs. If you upgrade to Pro, you unlock access to 13–18 templates depending on the current package and update cycle.

All templates are built to work seamlessly with Elementor, making it easy to import a layout and customize it visually — no dev help required.

While Sydney offers fewer templates than big players like Astra or OceanWP, the quality of the included demos is high, and they’re not bloated with unnecessary design elements.

Design Flexibility & Customization Options

Sydney gives you solid control over your site’s visual identity, all through the WordPress Customizer. You can customize:

  • Fonts (1000+ Google Fonts supported)

  • Global colors and typography

  • Blog layouts and post styles

  • Header and footer configurations

  • Sticky headers, sliders, testimonials, and portfolio widgets

With Sydney Pro, you get even more flexibility — including additional Elementor widgets like pricing tables and timelines, more header/footer layouts, and widget-based template controls.

And if you’re a more advanced user, you can still add custom CSS for deeper tweaks — but for most users, you won’t need it.

Integrations

Sydney is officially recommended by Elementor, and for good reason — they work together seamlessly. It also plays well with WooCommerce if you're planning to sell online. I was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to style shop pages, and the mini-cart features in the Pro version are a nice bonus for small stores.

No weird plugin conflicts, no layout breaks — it just works the way you'd expect.

Sydney Pricing

Sydney's pricing works like this:

  • Free version: Great for small business sites or freelancers on a tight budget.
  • Pro version: Starts at $69/year for one site, $99/year for five sites, or $199 for lifetime access to unlimited sites.

Divi is a popular WordPress theme that offers a large, diverse selection of templates to build an impressive website.

What I Like About Divi

Divi is a powerful WordPress theme that provides you with a lot of templates to choose from. There's something for everyone! You also get a wide variety of customization options to turn your site into a unique online platform.

However, it does have a steep learning curve compared to the other options on this list.

Ease of Use/Setup

After my experience with Divi's interface, I found it quite challenging.

Divi's interface is not as straightforward some of the other top options on this list. If you're a WordPress newbie, you'll need to have Divi's knowledge base open in another tab to find your way through. I found it a bit confusing to navigate when trying to set up my theme and page layout, which led to the lower score.

Template Availability

Divi provides access to a vast library of over 1,000 pre-made templates and 200 complete website packs. These cover various industries and site types, making it easy to find a design that fits your needs. You can use these templates as a starting point and customize them extensively.

Design Flexibility/Customization Options

What Divi lacks in ease of use, it makes up for in customization. First, you get a wide selection of page layouts to pick from -- and they cover a wide variety of niches.

Each page layout pack comes with a set of templates you can use to build your site's individual pages. The Divi page builder features a point-and-click system, where you need to select a specific element to edit it.

I'm not a big fan of this method, as it does become time-consuming if you're trying to edit the entire page. I would have preferred if there was a dedicated sidebar that lists out all the available design elements instead.

Integrations

The Divi builder is designed primarily for the Divi theme (which is separate to the plugin) but you can use it on other themes. But keep in mind that you may encounter compatibility issues.

In terms of plugins, Divi integrates with most popular plugins like WooCommerce, All in One Seo (AIOSEO), OptinMonster, and more.

Divi Pricing

Divi has two pricing plans:

  • Divi: $89 per year
  • Divi Pro: $277 per year

Divi also offers a lifetime plan for both plans — $249 and $297, respectively.

Astra also offers 250+ pre-built website templates to help you get started quickly. These templates are available for multiple niches and can be set up in a few clicks.

This theme’s pro plans also include advanced features for WooCommerce integration , so you can create an impressive online store to match your website.

Astra Pricing

Astra has three pricing plans:

  • Astra Pro: Starts from $47 per year (for 1 website)

When you purchase Ultra , you also get access to Themify , a popular page-building plugin . Your theme subscription also includes 12 Builder Add-ons to enhance your website’s design and functionality .

Some of these add-ons include countdown timers, progress bars, contact forms , WooCommerce integration, and sliders.

The Best WordPress Theme for Conversions (and Why I Keep Coming Back to It)

Over the years, I’ve built dozens of WordPress sites — some for clients, some for myself, and a few that were total disasters. I’ve spent more money than I want to admit on themes that looked amazing in the demo but turned into a headache once I actually tried to use them.

That’s why I keep coming back to Thrive Theme Builder.

Screenshot of Thrive Theme Builder landing page

Best WordPress Themes: Final Thoughts

After more than 10 years building websites, here’s what I’ve learned: choosing a WordPress theme is one of those decisions that feels small — until it isn’t.

The right theme won’t magically make your site successful, but it will save you time, headaches, and second-guessing. It makes showing up easier. Updating pages feels less like a chore. You stop fighting your tech and start focusing on your content, your business, your goals.

If you’re in that early stage — juggling ideas, trying to make things look right, maybe feeling a little stuck — I’ve been there.

And if you want my honest recommendation after trying pretty much everything out there?

Thrive Theme Builder is the theme I use when I just want things to work — and to get back to doing the work that actually matters.

Another aspect where Thrive Themes seems to excel is customer service. The support team receives commendations for their dedication and effectiveness, going beyond the call of duty to resolve issues.

The combination of powerful, conversion-focused tools and strong customer support makes Thrive Themes the BEST suite for individuals and agencies looking to optimize their WordPress sites for better user engagement and conversion. 100% recommended!

  • Been with Thrive Themes for a few years… Their themes are awesome (and so easily interchangeable!!) and their customer support is out of this world!! The Thrive Themes platform and suite makes my life soooo easy! From a course platform, to quizzes, to beautiful and simple to use Themes… there are no cons to subscribing!!

  • Thanks for this pro-level rundown, Chipo. I have used several of these but by far, my recommendation goes to Thrive Themes. Why?

First, I know that pretty websites alone are not enough. They don’t convert visitors to leads and into customers – unless they’re optimised for conversion. I know from long experience, plus the continual series of educational videos and blog posts over the past nine years (that I’ve been a happy customer) that Thrive Themes templates are optimised.

Also, other themes I’ve used in the past have proved difficult to work with. Options have been confusing, making any meaningful changes has been frustratingly difficult and over time, they have not always been maintained, leaving them open to security breaches. Thrive Themes has always been the opposite in every way.

And in fairness, I gave the others an honest go. I even tried to like them. But they just didn’t come close, no matter what the glossy images made them look like they could produce.

    • Thank you so much for these amazing words, Matthew! We love hearing about how our products have helped our customers, because we really want to see you guys win.

  • Since I chose to use ThriveThemes (some years ago now!), and the themes offered in the suit, never needed anything else. They’re easy to set up, very flexible for any desired changes, and in my opinion they can meet most needs. I really like being able to adapt them as I wish. I don’t even look anywhere else.

  • I use Thrive Suite for 5+ years and all my business is built around it. I can say that it was a life changer for me that this suite is actually meant to help the creators get leads, build funnels and grow a business on one of world known platform. Since then, updates changed the way I promote and get more leads and sales and this makes me give +1 on any one asking for a platform to build an online business.

  • When I began looking for a website for my author page, I researched many options. Coming across Thrive Themes I was able to create the look I wanted. Thrive Themes is great value for money as it continues to incorporate additional items that work to bring you more results. It also has templates for courses and quizzes. So no need to purchase another tool for those. For instance, I want to update my website with courses and some quizzes. While I had someone help me with the initial set-up I can easily change and plug in items as needed. I love that I don’t need to be a techie, have coding experience, or have to pay someone to add or change items on my website. I also like that they have instructional videos for when I need help. Whenever another author (or anyone) asks about website platforms, I tell them about Thrive. Check it out!

  • I’ve been using Thrive Themes for 3 years now and just installed it on a second (new) website. I’ve used WordPress before so I’m not a newbie, but I prefer not to customize a site all that much because it create maintenance nightmares later. Here’s what I learned from using TT twice. The first time, I didn’t understand all the different features and I’m still not using even a fraction of what the system can do. But I still made mistakes in not recognizing when I was working in the blog area versus the main site. I also didn’t fully understand how to keep everything consistent with global features. But I correct all of this when I built the second site. And now it’s super easy to maintain and make needed changes without customization.

But as a former programmer and now a content creator who has worked on several different platforms and WordPress sites…where Thrive Themes excels is in their customer service. Without fail, when I get stuck and can’t figure something out – I open a support ticket and give support access to my site. Within a day or two (often less), I get a thoughtful response that shows evidence the technician took the time to truly look at my site, detect the problem, and often fix it for me. Seriously – Unparalleled in this industry.

    • Thank you for sharing this, Shelley. I love what you shared about your growth with finding your way around our tools, and being able to use them on a second site. Thank you for being a part of the Thrive Themes family šŸ™‚

  • I’ve been using shapeshift since it came out and have loved it. I can’t say enough about Thrive Themes. It has been a Wow experience since I first got it. So much continued improvements/upgrades. I use the quizzes and online courses (Apprentice) and all their features/plug-ins. I can’t recommend it enough.

  • By far the most visually attractive but beyond that functional and easy to navigate. I enjoy building with Thrive Themes.

  • Great article. I am constantly looking at new WordPress Themes and trying them out for new clients. However, I always come back to Thrive because my business needs the advanced features that I get with the Thrive Suite.

  • I’m currently involved in working behind the scenes on the complete redesign and rebuild of a site. During the research and planning we experimented with no fewer than five others of your “13 Most Popular WordPress Themes” listed above, in addition to Thrive Themes. We settled on Thrive Themes. The interconnectedness of the various plugins and opportunity to minimise external plugins outside the Thrive Themes ecosystem was a key factor in the decision.

  • This is a vry nice overview, I’ll stick with Thrive Themes any day. I have build my website in the early days from notepad, afterwards in WordPress, and always felt, there is something missing.

That missing link is Thrive Themes, I save time setting up my website and have more time to do my business. It’s as simple as that.

  • This is a very comprehensive post about which theme you should consider using for your next website. I prefer the Thrive themes because they are truly wysiwyg and as a visual person I find this so much easier to implement. Some clever people have done all the hard work for you behind the scenes, and all you need to do is to make them your own using preferred colours and a few extra tweaks.

  • I have heard and used most of the aforementioned themes but never used thrived theme. I’ll give it a try on my next website. I hope it’s good as advertised here.

  • Those themes are really nice and look very professional! Very useful post with nice tips for people looking for neat themes!

  • Very informative and educational article. I learned a lot. Article was well put together and is a great learning tool.

  • Hi Chipo, great blog post! As a website designer for 10+ years who started on dreamweaver and have used Divi themes and all other website builder software (squarespace, wix, godaddy, etc), Thrive Theme is by far the best theme builder in terms of easy-to-use, extensiveness of customisation (that doesn’t damage SEO/site performance) AND longevity. As someone who has been in the industry for a while, and even if you want a FAST theme (yes you have a thrive theme template customised in under an hour) – you need the company who owns the theme to be reliable, constantly updating, and innovating with the times. This is where Thrive is the real winner. Everything from customer support, youtube channel, the weekly emails – they don’t cut corners and they are here to stay! That’s really important for a business owner – switching themes and software is an expensive business mistake that most business owners can’t afford to make! I love thrive themes – I’m currently designing a site with Xpert Theme and I’m loving it. Before that, Shapeshifter has been my go-to for years! Thanks Thrive Themes for keeping website building simple, extensively customisable and reliable!!

  • I’ve used a few of these themes! Thrive is a good choice. It’s quick and provides good design flexibility. You can set your website colours and unique look while also utilising the prebuilt templates.

  • I never realized how a webpage layout would have so much impact based on the business style of a company, this gives me a lot to consider in the future even for personal web design.

  • So much info! But very helpful. I’m needing WordPress more and more so I found this very helpful. I had to save it for reference.

  • This testimonial reflects my experience. I began creating my website using Notepad, before migrating to WordPress. However, I felt a constant lack in the process.

Discovering Thrive Themes filled that gap. Using it has saved me precious time in setting up my site, leaving me more available for my professional activities. It’s become an essential tool that really simplifies the management of my site, and it’s incredibly efficient.

  • Astra & OceanWP are by far my go to when I’m building a website for someone. They have so many flexibilities.

  • This is a solid overview! I’ve used several of these themes myself, and I can definitely relate – choosing the wrong theme upfront can make everything more challenging. A great theme should look good and also keep your site running smoothly. It’s all about finding the right balance between design and performance, and this list really does a great job of pointing out themes that get that mix just right.

  • I once read a comment from a very successful female entrepreneur: No system is 100% perfect, so if you find one that works for you, stick with it! I agree! That is what Thrive themes have been for me for years! And the best part? The support! And that is rare these days:)
