What’s the Upsell Plugin?
The Upsell Plugin is a premium WordPress plugin that allows users to create sales funnels with minimal time and effort.
What makes the Upsell Plugin better over other sales funnel tools is that it fully integrates with most of the visual page builders available for WordPress. This means you can build your sales funnel pages without having to know how to code or relying on a specific visual builder tool.
And I can tell you first hand… there is no better way to build powerful sales funnels than with Thrive Architect. And, when you combine it with the Upsell Plugin, you can now achieve conversion focused sales funnel designs that provide a smooth customer checkout experience.
How Does the Upsell Plugin Connect to Thrive Architect?
There are three steps to creating a sales funnel with the Upsell Plugin and Thrive Architect.
- 1Create your sales funnel pages with Thrive Architect
- 2Create your primary, upsell and downsell products with the Upsell Plugin
- 3Set up the appropriate link behaviors and redirects inside the Upsell Plugin
Let’s walk through a real-life example to show you how it works now…
How to Create a Sales Funnel with the Upsell Plugin and Thrive Architect — Step-By-Step
Ok, just to recap…
A typical sales funnel consists of:
- 1A Sales Page
- 2An Upsell Page
- 3A Downsell Page
- 4A Thank You / Order Confirmation Page
In this example, we’re going to offer a $199 online course on our main sales page.
For the upsell product, we’ll pitch a one-on-one coaching session worth $499. The upsell product sales page will load whenever a customer clicks the buy button on the main product sales page.
And for the downsell product, we’ll pitch a $48 masterclass whenever a customer clicks the “No thanks, maybe next time” anchor text link option (instead of the buy button) on the upsell product sales page.
Finally, we’ll use the Thank You page to display our customer’s order details after purchase.
Let’s begin!
Create a Sales Funnel with the Upsell Plugin and Thrive Architect
For the first step, you’ll need to create each of the pages of your sales funnel with Thrive Architect.
Thrive Architect makes doing this easy since it provides you dozens of tutorialized template sets that each include different Sales Page templates, Upsell Page templates and Thank You page templates. Just select the templates you like, follow the tutorialized copy on the template to customize a conversion focused sales page, and click “Publish” at drag and drop speed.
Once your funnel pages are ready, you simply record the URLs for each page so you can link them to the appropriate calls-to-action on each page, as well as add them to appropriate redirect options inside the Upsell Plugin, which we’ll cover how to do shortly.
Note:
On the main sales page of this example, I have embedded the Upsell Plugin’s check-out form with a shortcode.
You can do the same for your sales page OR display a call-to-action button instead that redirects customers to a dedicated checkout page. Which method works best to generate more conversions? You’ll have to A/B test that to find out for your business. To do so, you can use Thrive Optimize — our A/B testing add-on plugin for Thrive Architect.
In my example, since I have the check-out form embedded on my main product sales page, it means I don’t need to assign a redirect URL to a call to action. I simply assign the Upsell Plugin to redirect customers to my upsell product page if they click the buy button on my main product sales page.
You can do this within the product settings of your main product inside the Upsell Plugin dashboard:
Also for this example’s main product sales page, you don’t need to assign a “skip purchase” redirect URL to anything because there isn’t an option given to skip a purchase. If people don’t want to buy the product, they can simply leave the site.
When it comes to the upsell product sales page and the downsell product sales page however, we do need to include two calls-to-action on each of those pages:
- 1A buy button
- 2A “No thank you” anchor text link
Take a look at how I do that on the upsell product sales page for this example:
My “Add for $499/month” buy button links to the one-on-one coaching session upsell product URL assigned inside the Upsell Plugin. You can grab this link from the URL Options tab for your upsell product inside the Upsell Plugin.
Notice how there’s also a “No thanks, maybe next time” anchor text link option for customers underneath the buy button? This is important as it provides customers the option not to purchase the upsell product if they don’t want it. And this is where the Skip Purchase URL option comes in handy inside the Upsell Plugin.
The same goes for designing downsell product sales pages and setting up your downsell product inside the Upsell Plugin. That way, should a customer pass on your upsell product offer, you can redirect them to your downsell offer instead.
Finally, you need to assign a Thank You / Order Confirmation page redirect in the Upsell Plugin for after customers have made their purchase:
To display the details of a customer’s order on your Thank You page, simply embed the [upsell_orders] shortcode Upsell Plugin provides, and it will automatically display your customers’ purchase details for you.

This feature is so exciting! It’s incredible to have a fully integrated option for upselling and downselling other than what is available as a WooCommerce plugin addon or Thrive Cart functionality. Many thanks for the fantastic video showing exactly how to create the process!
Thank you for stopping by, Tracy! I appreciate the kind words. And yes, this is a super sweet way of creating upsells and downsells without leaving WordPress!
I am a very happy customer of Eric’s and his The Upsell Plugin for about 2 years. So jazzed about it and now just over the moon with the TT Automator hooks. I was less than thrilled with Woo. This is splendid once you get your head around it. Even rocks with LearnDash. Now Apprentice. Sweet job all around.
So how does the payment part work? Do you still need a separate cart plugin, or can you directly use it with Stripe for example? And when will it be available?
Hi there, Silvia! The Upsell Plugin integrates with Stripe. They have a cool tutorial on how you can get this done.
As for “when will it be available”… Everything covered in this post is already available for you to use 🙂
I always wondered why Thrive Suite provides a top notch selection of tools and interfaces to create beautiful interfaces and funnels, but never an upsell functionality.
The Upsell plugin is good, but something similar should have been included in Thrive Suite 3 years ago+.
Actually, given how much funnel building is provided by Thrive Suite, an upsell plugin should have been included well before Thrive Apprentice, whose functionality is tangent but not integral to Thrive Suite innate funnel building.
Hi, Dario! I’ll forward your comment to our team. Thank you for your feedback!
To be clear, UpSell integrates with Thrive Apprentice meaning we can skip Woo or Thrive Cart completely to sell courses?
Yes 🙂 You could use Upsell Plugin instead to sell Thrive Apprentice products.
I’m VERY big on “don’t build your home on rented properties” and the Upsell plugin allows me to do everything ClickFunnels promises to do without the all the bugs and issues CF has.. AND do it all on MY site so that I improve my SEO, my tracking and my conversions.
Now, if that’s not reason enough to use Upsell, then add this to the mix – Eric provides superior support. He’s always there to help with any pressing issue, highly responsive and dependable.
I recommend his plugin to all my clients, and you’ll be wise to do the same.
Thank you so much for your comment, Yifat!
Very good article, thank you.
In Vietnam due to limitations because users do not have the habit of paying via Visa but only using Bank Transfer, and I also found the best option, The most flexible is Woofunnels it is super powerful and integrates Autonami to automatically by email
Thank you for sharing your experience!
